Buy Baby Bath Oil
Forget all the beautiful, scented baby wash and massage oil, what you find you will use everyday is Baby Bath Oil. It’s perfect for keeping baby eczema at bay, and your baby’s sensitive skin smooth and blemish free. I use QV Baby Bath Oil.
Onesies with two-way zips
With all the nappy changes, you are going to be zipping and unzipping a onesie so many times a day. Do yourself a favour and purchase onesies that have two-way zips – that way you can do the zip at the bottom of the leg, or at the top near the neck.
Leggings for crawling
When your bub starts to crawl and speed crawl around the house, depending on the type of floor you have (floorboards, wood, carpet, tiles etc) you’ll soon notice that your little-ones knees are getting red and bruised! Purchase some leggings so your baby can hone their crawling skills without hurting themselves.
Nappy Bins
Before my baby started solids, this nappy bin in the nursery made life so easy. It is designed to keep the nappies sealed and is stink free. But, as soon as your baby starts solids and the poo smell changes – this nappy bin is not useful.
Bottle Feeding
I breastfeed my baby, but when I went back to work around 5 months, I needed to express and have her bottle feed. The problem was I left it all too late, my little one did not take to the bottle when I tried after three months. My advice is if you think you might want to have the option of bottle feeding, then start this process before your baby is two months.
Changing Table versus Mat
Although I had a changing table that was high up and good for my back, as soon as my baby started rolling it was way too dangerous to change my baby on it. I got this really comfortable nappy changing mat instead – it’s super light and durable, and I would take it travelling and pack it in the car on trips.
Sleeping conundrums
A friend of my had twins, and both babies slept in the swanky snoo, which is meant to be a magic sleep bassinette for babies. However, only one of the twins liked it, and the other twin would not sleep in it and wanted to be held to sleep. That story is powerful as sometimes it’s got nothing to do with your parenting style or the environment, babies are born with different attributes and how they sleep.
For me, by baby daughter loves to contact nap. Although I now have two cots, she doesn’t sleep in either of them and prefers to sleep in my bed. Because of this I became a bit of a nerd in safe sleeping and purchased an Owlet, so I recommend you do the same.
A Midwife suggested I purchased a DockaTot – and this ended up being a game changer for about three months. My baby would sleep in this during the day! But as soon as she could roll it wasn’t safe.
I think if you ride the sleeping wave, and you get up to speed with safe-sleep, just know that what one mum does for her bub might not work for yours and vice versa.
Who’s ever heard of a teenager sleeping in their parents’ bed – no one! So, trust time and that your baby will get into their cot when they are ready.
Get your silly on
Babies love playing games. Whether it’s playing a game of chase when you’re attempting to put a new nappy on, crawling with them in a mock race or playing peek-a-boo! I have learned to lean into my silly side, and my baby daughter loves it. Whether it’s a silly dance, a funny voice or expression or just some random game you make up on the spot such as throwing a finger puppet up in the air – your baby delights in silly and playing games…and their cute little giggles and laughs are adorable.
Lamp with a foot button
In the nursery I wanted a soft light which I could put on and off with my foot. This is handy as when you’re holding baby and your hands are full, having the flexibility to turn a lamp on with your foot makes life so much simpler. I found one at Ikea.
Mothers Group
I never thought I was going to be a Mothers Group type of person, but when you become a mum, a lot of things you thought about yourself change. Mothers Group is a fantastic way to get tips and get looped in. Through Mothers Group I started swim lessons for my baby at 4 months, I knew where to purchase a pram fan, I learned about apps which had easy nutritious recipes, I learned what medicine flavour to buy…the list goes on!
